There’s a debate over the name of this tree as “Filbert” or “Hazelnut”. I’m in camp Hazel as the Oregon native Corylus Cornuta var. californica carries the common name of California Hazelnut… with no mention of Fil or Bert. I grew up with these wild ones in the mountains of Southern Oregon while over the past few years I’ve resided alongside a farm that specializes in producing a domesticated crop of Organic Hazelnuts. Hazelnut is the official nut tree of Oregon due to the high volume of optimal quality nuts grown here and shipped worldwide. The varieties best suited for commercial growing do not originate here, like the native variety.
